2025 Is The Homebody Era

With mortgage rates expected to remain above 6% in 2025, according to Realtor.com, many homeowners are deciding to stay put and focus on home improvement projects instead. As the 2025 home design trend predictions are rolling in, I spotted one that was quite interesting: Thumbtack has declared 2025 as The Homebody Era. I reached out to Thumbtack to get more insight regarding their upcoming home interior design trends – and also spoke with other designers to get their thoughts on 2025 trends.

“After consulting interior designers, general contractors, architects, and home builders from coast to coast, we’re revealing the trends that will soon define home design and décor,” says Kendra Sinclair, Thumbtack’s design trends expert. She predicts that 2025 will be the year of anchoring ourselves at home and creating a soothing space. “From reconnecting with nature and creating a calming environment to investing in our current pieces rather than buying new, 2025 will be all about rooting in place.”

Sinclair says homeowners are willing to invest in their homes, and almost two-thirds are budgeting at least $20,000 for home design improvement in 2025.

Read on to see what home pros predict will happen at home in 2025.

Bringing The Natural World Indoors

While 2024 was the year of the backyard, with homeowners prioritizing sprucing up their outdoor spaces, 2025 is all about bringing the outdoor oasis inside. “Homeowners can expect a surge in nature-inspired designs that evoke a sense of calm and a return to our roots, using greenery and neutral color palettes to create a soothing environment,” Sinclair says.

According to the Thumbtack survey, the top trend identified was biophilia and increased connectivity to nature and plants. “If you’re a plant newbie, your house lacks natural light, or you just don’t want the responsibility of regularly watering plants, try a snake plant or cast iron plant — they’re low maintenance and perfect for beginners,” Sinclair advises.

And natural materials will also take center stage when it comes to remodels. Sinclair points to 80% of trend pros identifying natural wood (untreated with paint) as one of the top construction materials of 2025, and a majority (60%) anticipating a heightened focus on natural light with larger windows and skylights.

Natural wood carries over to outdoor trends as well. When asked about outdoor design projects that will be popular, a majority of Thumbtack pros (56%) identified creating calming spaces with gardens, small ponds and fountains alongside growing gardens, vegetables and composting (36%).

Everything Old is New Again (At Home)

Pros in the Thumbtack survey (57%), also predict a focus on remodeling versus building new as a home interior design trend for 2025. “Simple yet impactful updates are leading this trend, with 60% of pros predicting that room redesigns—including painting, updating furniture, and accessorizing with rugs and plants—will be one of the most popular home design projects of 2025,” Sinclair says. Close behind, 58% of pros anticipate a rise in room remodels. Whether they need to create a work from home space, or enlarge the home for a growing family, homeowners are refreshing their layouts and repurposing spaces to suit evolving needs.

Expect vintage touches like antiques and heirlooms to trend in 2025 as well. “Whether it’s adding vintage mirrors, framing old maps or prints, or bringing in nostalgic accessories like record players or typewriters, vintage is making a comeback,” Sinclair reveals.

It’s Time To Be Homebodies, Together

Entertaining at home continues to grow in popularity, and there’s a focus on being functional and stylish. “According to the pros, creating spaces conducive to gathering and making memories will be a priority for homeowners, turning their homes into hubs for connection, whether it’s a cozy dinner party in the dining room or a summer BBQ in the backyard,” Sinclair says. In fact, Thumbtack reveals that pros believe kitchens will be the most prioritized room for redesign in 2025, followed closely by living and family rooms.

A Deeper Dive into Materials

According to luxury interior designer Margarita Bravo, statement marble and stone will take center stage in 2025. “Expect statement marble and exotic stones with bold veining and unique patterns to become the focal point of kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas,” she predicts. “These materials bring organic luxury, merging artistry with nature’s beauty.” And alongside these materials, Bravo says warmed-up neutrals and earth tones will continue rising, creating inviting, grounding, and effortlessly elegant environments.

Elle Cantrell, owner and lead designer at Elle Du Monde, sees a return to bold natural stones and a mix of stained woods. “Incorporating natural materials provides a connection to nature and adds warmth to a space, and this becomes ever important as more clients want spaces designed to promote health and wellness,” she explains.

And you can expect translucent materials to be popular as well, according to Annie Obermann, co-founder and principal designer at Forge & Bow. “Wavy glass, resin, and acrylics will take shape in 2025, creating movement and fluidity in design,” she says.

The AI Aesthetic

Artificial intelligence has impacted almost every area of life – and home design/decor is no exception. “Pros expect that AI’s impact on home design will grow, with 76% of pros saying they believe AI will play a role in shaping home layouts and design in 2025,” Sinclair says. “Whether it’s better understanding your style, creating models of what furniture and decor will look like in your home, or designing dream layouts, AI can simplify what is often a complex and time-consuming process,” she explains.

Smart home technology is being used to enhance convenience, efficiency, and sustainability. Sinclair says pros have identified the top smart home installations that homeowners are most likely to add in 2025:

  1. Smart thermometers
  2. Smart lighting
  3. Energy-efficient / smart appliances

Cantrell predicts that rechargeable lighting will also grow in popularity. “This really hit the consumer market within the last year and more vendors are beginning to introduce rechargeable options, which provide flexibility in so many different settings,” she says.

Real Furniture Has Curves

According to Jo Ann Howa, owner and principal designer at Natural Instincts, curved furniture will expand in popularity in 2025. “I’m talking about curved arms, curved backs, and soft, rounded corners on all kinds of furniture,” she says. “As comfort continues to be central to design, curved lines are naturally seen as more inviting and soothing compared to harsh, angular shapes.”

Influencers Are The Home Tastemakers

Another interesting home design trend cited by Thumbtack: pop culture will continue to play a leading rule in design inspiration. “According to our experts, social media influencers and celebrity homes will have the strongest influence on home design trends, followed by DIY videos on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok for homeowners looking for budget-friendly, creative ideas,” Sinclair says. When asked which platforms will influence design trends the most, she tells me that Instagram led the way (71%), followed closely by Pinterest (67%), and TikTok (44%).

Movies and TV series will also continue to spark design inspiration – and Sinclair says you can expect to see a lot more pink and green. “Whether it’s Bridgerton bringing back romanticism, Barbie continuing to splash pink across bedrooms, or Wicked inspiring the rich jewel tones of emerald glam, pop culture will continue to infiltrate our homes.”

Rich Colors Reign

However, not everything will be in pink and green hues. Elizabeth Gullett, principal designer at Elizabeth Gullett Interior Design, believes that colors will be moody and masculine in 2025. “A welcome break from the all-white-everywhere look, get ready to embrace rich brown, burgundy, deep wine and plum,” she predicts. “Mixed with white, these tones create a high-contrast look; when mixed with natural woods, they become earthy.” She recommends choosing darker woods with a higher sheen for an elegant, elevated vibe.

Obermann also predicts the return of more color. “After years of neutrals and minimalist palettes dominating design, there’s a strong move toward richer, warmer tones.” And she points to burgundy, which symbolizes comfort, individuality, intensity, and sophistication, as one color that fits perfectly into this shift.

Plaster The Plaster

The final home design trend noted by our experts is the use of plaster in the home. “Plaster walls are taking us by storm, as they offer rich depth and interest that paint just cannot mimic,” says Gullett. “Flat or textured, high gloss or smooth, on the walls or on the ceilings, there are so many options.” In fact, Gullett predicts that you’ll see entire bathrooms – even showers – in this material.
